Towards the end of last week we started hearing strange rumblings around the SEO community. People were starting to see weird things in the Google Toolbar’s Pagerank showings. Sites would jump in pagerank, then fall, then go back to what they were, then jump again.
What was going on? Was Google actually updating the toolbar’s pagerank?
Well, yes, actually….Google DID update the toolbar’s pagerank indicator tool.
Two weeks ago Google stunned most SEO’s by removing the Pagerank indicator from Google Webmaster Tools leading many of us to believe, myself included, that Google would soon remove the Pagerank indicator from the Google toolbar as well.
And then they went out and did the exact opposite! Well, that’s Google for you!
What’s the significance of this change? Well…there really isn’t a significance. The Google Toolbar Pagerank indicator is really just a snapshot of your web site’s Pagerank on a given day….the last day they updated the tool (last Friday we think, is the actual day).
So the toolbar will likely show the same Pagerank for your site as it did last Friday, until Google get’s around to updating the Toolbar again.
But your web site’s Pagerank constantly shifts, every minute of everyday as more sites link to you and other sites stop linking to you and as you continue to build your web site and expand with new web pages.
For all you accountants out there, its like the difference between an income statement and a balance sheet. The balance sheet is one day in time, while the income statement is constantly changing each day. Ok, bad example…but you get the gist.
So, as I’ve always said, don’t put too much thought into what the Google Toolbar says about your Pagerank. seoFool.com has a Pagerank of zero! Of course, the site is only two weeks old…but we still get a bunch of traffic each day from the search engines because of the quality content that I put out each day. But then again, I do own several web sites that went from Pagerank 5 to 6 in this update, but still…but I digress…
Anyway, that’s the secret of Pagerank and SEO in general…forget about Pagerank, and focus on creating quality content that web site visitors love, and Pagerank will take care of itself because people will link to you on their own.
So how did you make out in this Pagerank update? Did your site go up or down? I’d love to hear, so Comment Below!

Update: I mentioned that seoFool.com currently has a pagerank of zero (we’re only 2 weeks old). Interestingly enough, my twitter page twitter.com/seofool has a pagerank of 2….and I started it at the same time I started seoFool.com Very, very, very interesting!
Do you find that your twitter page’s pagerank increased in this update?
